How to Live a Kick-Ass Life (and be the strongest leader of it)

strong woman

“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” ― Sheryl Sandberg

One way leaders in organizations can lose power and influence is by focusing on the power over others, or dominance.

The same goes for losing the influence of leadership over your own life.

You are the strongest leader in your life.  YOU.  You determine where you want to go, how you’ll get there, and what kind of perspective you’ll have along the way.

Trying to control others around you is not only futile, it’s detrimental to your journey.  Any short term gains you think you get by supposed control over others are miniscule.  And they won’t last.

Don’t get sucked into drama.

There’s a difference between being exposed to and experiencing drama and getting sucked into it.  It’s all about how you handle it.  When drama comes knocking on your door, pause.  Think about the outcome you desire, and what action you need to take to get that outcome.  Do you want this drama to continue?  (Be honest with yourself.  Sometimes playing out the drama is something we want to happen…something we feel we need to get over it.)  Is it frustration or anger or the desire to prove someone wrong fueling your need to respond?  Be mindful of your motives before you act.

Then, move on.

Don’t make decisions based on fear.

When your focus is on what you fear will happen, your decision-making ability is paralyzed.  Turn your gaze toward what you want to be happening and act as if that is what’s happening.  Your decisions will be much more in line with what you truly want.

Don’t allow yourself to stay stuck.

You’re human.  You’re going to experience the full range of emotions.  That’s good!  It’s essential, though, to be deliberate about which emotions you stay focused on.  Don’t let yourself get stuck in sadness, despair, or apathy.  Feeling them is fine – burying emotions isn’t healthy.  But use the energy to focus on where you want to be, and then take action to get there.

Love and light,

Melissa
